The Paradise Island

It doesn’t take a long time to explain what we have to do, feel and think when we are aware of the meaning of life.

As you certainly know, a small number of families or groups have power enough to control economy and politics all over the world. From this unpleasant reality, let’s try to get a story somewhat similar to a fairy tale.
Generally those powerful groups don’t bother with small islands.
This one was just a small  point on naval maps, but looked particularly beautiful when Mr.John Jr.’s yacht (which was rather a ship), sailed round it.
John Jr. landed, had a short trek and arrived at a cosy green corner in front of a lagoon. “Absolutely perfect for a seven stars hotel”, cried out John Jr., who was very young and still enjoyed business.
So John Jr. brought his seven star hotel plan to John Senior. The latter was a very experienced businessman and politician. He was also unhappy and bored to tears with his life, even if nobody, not even his gorgeous wife, knew his secret.
Some people think that storks, the ones entrusted with distributing newborn babies to their parents, sometimes get asleep while flying. So the bird forgets the importance of his/her job and, still half asleep, drops the baby into the house of the wrong family!
From time to time, John tried to explain his discontent joking and thinking that his stork had been a sleepy one. Which might have been his real, ideal family? Nevertheless, lifelong he had perfectly performed his duties.
Sometimes he felt a strange feeling moving inside his chest, close to the heart. He remembered the happiness, wonder and magic he had felt when his family’s chief cook told him, the smallest of the children, tall, blonde and tiny, stories from all this world and from other worlds too. God knows where the chief cook had learned such stories. She was fat, dark skinned, always smiling, had a good perfume and was so tender when she hug him!
Looking at his son’s papers, “Ok, Junior”, said John. ”I think this is a good plan for a new hotel. I’ll go and see the island myself”. Junior was astonished, because lately his father carefully avoided travelling.
One sunny day the sea showed its most beautiful colours. Mr. John Sr. was feeling terribly bored on board his yacht, that is, his ship. He landed, and had just started trekking when he came across a waterfall. He could hear it and catch a glimpse of fresh waters through the trees of the forest.
Reverence, that’s what John felt. A long forgotten feeling.
Some children were playing joyfully in a pool nearby. Two laughing little girls started throwing water at John’s legs.
Finally they all left the pool and invited John to come to their houses. There were several houses: simple, tidy, sun bathed. Covered with solar panels on the roof. There were very large fields in front of the houses: with flowers and many kinds of vegetables still growing on their plants. Fields showing various species of trees, some carrying ripe fruits. Some giants trees were busy giving shape to mangos. Young and elder adults there looked incredibly calm and happy.
An old man, thin, straight and strong, told John that they had been living there since the last years of the sixties. They had been groups of so called hippies. “We have been much luckier than hippies, though. We found and understood what our entire generation was looking for.” John looked at him with a quizzical expression on his face. “May we invite you for dinner tonight, Mr. John?”, asked the old man.
That was a very strange evening for John. Many persons had gathered outside to have dinner together. Some peacocks were walking in the garden. Other beautiful birds that John had never seen were half hidden on the trees or walked among the peacocks. From time to time each kind of bird talked in his/hers own way: singing, shouting, giving John all kinds of new, amazing musics with which Nature had endowed them before time began. He talked and talked with so many people, women and men, boys and girls and childs, about a wide range of topics, such as “do you have water enough to grow rice? Who teaches the children?” (there were schools in a neighbouring island). Or: how fast do you think ice will melt? When will Florida disappear? Are there dangerous felids in the island?
People started to go home when full moon was high in the sky. Some children fell asleep lying on blankets spread on the ground: they gradually stopped to laugh, whisper and roll their small bodies one against the other. Some adults brought them more bedspreads for the night. John laid down over a red and orange thick embroidered wollen cover. “I’ve made it” said smiling a woman close to him. John reckoned what would have been the price of such a wonder in case it reached a downtown London shop.
The old man laid next to him and, looking at the stars in such an unbelievably black velvet sky, told John some truths about human life: the ones he had learned from the natives who inhabited the surrounding islands. No need for long talks. Just a few sentences. It doesn’t take a long time to explain what we have to do, feel and think when we are aware of the meaning of life. Half asleep, John thought, “Oh God! The family where that stupid stork should have dropped me is this one!”
Next morning they took John to the forest to look for some nice mammals. They didn’t meet many, so John had to delight his eyes and learn about the island’s mammals, birds and reptiles, looking at the paintings that various inhabitants had made.
How does this story end? John bought Paradise Island from the Government, in order to protect all the inhabitants, humans and animals. He created various Sanctuaries to save animals all around the world. He stopped to do business and politics. His family didn’t appreciate his choice. John knew too many secrets. Hidden scandals, some crimes or financial crimes. John couldn’t leave the game. They tried to find some psychiatrist willing to declare that John Sr. was getting crazy, but they didn’t succeed. He convinced his family/group that he would never and never speak about his previous life. Never. Which life, by the way? He went back to Paradise Island very often and travelled in many continents to help needy creatures. John is aware that somebody is still controlling him, and knows that a sudden bullet could reach him. Then he remembers what the natives of the neighbouring islands use to say when life is over. John takes a few deep breaths and goes on enjoying himself.
